Gpupdate Command

When “Always wait for the network at computer startup and logon” is disabled, Windows might apply computer policies in the background. Running gpupdate /sync forces a synchronous policy application.

Normally, Windows refreshes Group Policy settings in the background every 90 minutes (with a random offset of 0 to 30 minutes). When you need a policy change to take effect immediately—such as after creating a new user restriction, mapping a network drive, or deploying software— gpupdate forces the computer to check for and apply new policies right away. Why Use gpupdate ?

However, just because the tool successfully completed its check does not guarantee that your specific policy applied. To verify what actually happened, use the following tools:

When a user calls the helpdesk complaining that they cannot see their newly assigned network drive or network printer, the first step is often to run gpupdate /force on their machine to pull the latest configuration mappings. 3. Testing New GPOs

This typically indicates insufficient permissions, either on the local machine or on the network share where GPOs are stored ( SYSVOL ).

This tells gpupdate to wait up to 600 seconds (10 minutes) for the policy processing to finish before returning to the command prompt. By default, it returns immediately, which can cause issues in batch scripts. A value of 0 means wait forever; -1 means don't wait at all.

Running gpresult /r provides a summary of the applied GPOs for both the user and the computer.

gpupdate forces the client to re-read policies from the domain controller. It does not replicate changes between domain controllers or modify Active Directory. For that, you need repadmin /syncall .

Windows Server 2025, now in public preview, builds on the existing tools with a focus on security and integration with modern device management. While the core gpupdate command remains a fundamental tool for Active Directory environments, Microsoft is increasingly emphasizing Intune and cloud-native policies. However, for all on-premises and hybrid environments, gpupdate will continue to be the go-to command for instant policy refreshes.

By default, gpupdate refreshes both Computer and User policies. Use this parameter to refresh only one scope.

gpupdate [/target: user] [/force] [/wait: ] [/logoff] [/boot] [/sync] Use code with caution.
