On October 3 and 4, 1993, a U.S. military force—Task Force Ranger—launched a mission in the heart of Mogadishu, Somalia, aiming to capture key lieutenants of the powerful warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid. The mission quickly spiraled into a desperate and prolonged urban firefight. What was expected to be a one-hour operation turned into a sixteen-hour battle for survival. Two U.S. Black Hawk helicopters were shot down by rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs), and the soldiers on the ground found themselves pinned down by thousands of heavily armed Somali fighters. By the end of the battle, eighteen Americans were dead and seventy-three were wounded, while estimates place Somali militia and civilian casualties in the hundreds.
