The residents of Linha Cristal, a village of Italian descendants, are fed up with a local sewer problem that has plagued them for months. When Marina (Fernanda Torres) and her husband Joaquim (Wagner Moura) petition the city hall for a septic tank, they are told there is no budget for sanitation.
Faced with this Catch-22—money for art but not for health—the community, led by the indomitable Marina, decides to play the system’s own game. Their plan is simple (in theory): use the film grant to make a documentary about the construction of the septic tank, thus freeing up other funds. To comply with the grant's rules, they decide the documentary must be a fictional work. Thus, the "Horror Movie from the Septic Tank" is born, a sci-fi B-movie about a monster living in the construction site of a sewage tank. What follows is a hilarious and heartwarming journey as the clueless but enthusiastic residents of Linha Cristal attempt to become filmmakers, dealing with everything from casting and special effects to the ever-looming threat of local political sabotage.
